VET Furniture Making
Overview
At Ranges TEC you can undertake a pre-apprenticeship course in Furniture and Cabinet Making. This is a nationally recognised course that provides you with hands-on experience working on furniture and cabinet making projects and exposes you to a range of specialisations in the area.
The course prepares you for a school or work-based apprenticeship as a Cabinet Maker or for work in an entry-level role.
Occupation Description
Cabinet makers make or repair furniture using solid timber, flat-panel or timber-based products.
Cabinetmakers may perform the following tasks:
- Prepare drawings from specifications or work out job requirements by looking at drawings and specifications
- Select and prepare timber and manufactured board
- Mark out, cut and shape pieces using saws, chisels, planes, power tools and woodworking machines
- Trim and glue joints and fit parts together to form sections of furniture
- Place sections in clamps, apply pressure and reinforce joints with nails, dowels and screws
- Assemble sections to form completed articles
- Fit hinges, locks, catches, drawers and shelves
- Install completed products
- Repair damaged furniture and cabinets
- Make jigs, templates or prototypes for the production of furniture
Personal Requirements
- Enjoy practical and manual activities
- Be able to follow written instructions
- Be able to work to a high level of accuracy
- Be able to make mathematical calculations
- Have good communication skills
- Have good hand-eye coordination
- Be free from allergies to dust
