VET Studies

VET is a common acronym used within the VCE VM. It is short for Vocational Education and Training. It is also commonly called a pre-app, pre-apprenticeship or Certificate II. At Ranges TEC students have the opportunity to complete parts of different Certificate II courses and/or a full Certificate II in their choice of Trade. It is common for Ranges TEC students to complete their VCE VM having studied parts of more than one trade. For example, if a student is not sure of the trade they wish to follow, they can take a Certificate II in one trade in Year 11, and take on another Certificate II in Year 12. This is part of learning transferable skills and career exploration that is possible at Ranges TEC.

It also can include our Short Courses:

  • Construction White Card
  • First Aid
  • Food Handling Safety

If your child would like to take on a VET certificate that Ranges TEC does not offer this can be considered if it can fit in with the whole program (extra fees may apply)

As much as possible both Literacy and Numeracy is taught within the projects. However there is still a need for students to have specific skills classes to make sure they are both learning the required skills and covering all the elements of both these disciplines according to the VCAL guidelines. These classes are similar to conventional school. Personal Development is also largely integrated however we also have one class a week called My Story. This is a journey of self-discovery where students are given the opportunity to explore their journey in life up to this point. It is a valuable class of personal growth.
The Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major is a ‘hands on’ option for senior students and has over 20,000 enrolments in Victoria annually. Like the VCE, the VM is a recognised senior qualification that is issued by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Unlike the VCE, which is widely used by students as a pathway to university, the VCE MC focuses on training students for vocational pathways. Students who complete VCE VM are more likely to be interested in further TAFE training, undertaking an apprenticeship, or entering the workforce after completing Year 12. VCE VM is an alternative pathway to the traditional VCE.
VCE VM is made up of four core strands: Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development Skills, and Work Related Skills, with each strand having prescribed learning objectives. Students at Ranges TEC fulfil the requirements of VCE VM in a number of applied learning environments. Central to the Ranges TEC VCE VM program is project based learning focused on collaborative learning, community engagement and business awareness.
As part of their VCE VM students also undertake a nationally recognised certificate. In general this is a pre-apprenticeship certificate in one of Ranges TEC trades (Hospitality, Building and Construction, Horticulture, Furniture making, Electrotechnology, Engineering).
An important part of the Ranges TEC VCE VM program is work placement. Forty days are available throughout the school year for year 11 and 12 students to engage in ‘real work’. This time, actively supported by staff, is clearly linked to school learning activities and provides many opportunities for student assessment. At Ranges TEC we recognise that student outcomes are greatly improved through a meaningful work placement program.
There are a number of options available within each of these programs and Ranges TEC is committed to making every effort to provide flexible, personalised learning pathways to meet student needs. Pathways are made up of individualised project work, School Based Apprenticeships or Traineeships (SBAT), Certificate studies, a variety of program options and more. Please contact us to discuss personalised options.
Since 2012 we’ve seen many of our Ranges TEC graduates gain apprenticeships and begin work-life in their chosen career.

Ranges TEC has helped me a lot, growing my skills and passion for woodwork. If I went to another school I would be learning basic skills and tools, but here I get to learn from a professional who is passionate about both their trade and seeing the best in me.
